How to Calm an Excited Dog

Reading to a dog is a wonderful way to bond with a pet while enhancing reading skills. The following training tips are provided by ARF's Dog Training University.

Before reading Banjo Gets a B-A-T-H to your dog, make sure Fido has gone outside to potty. Additionally, play a fun game like fetch or catch to reduce his energy. In final preparation, set up a designated reading spot by placing a blanket in a quiet place.

While you’re reading:

  • Ask your dog to lie down on the blanket. Use a treat to guide your dog into a down position by holding it to his nose and lowering it to the ground.
  • Reward your dog for lying down and being calm with a treat or a belly rub.
  • If your dog enjoys chew toys, such as Kongs or Nylabones, give him a yummy treat to keep him occupied.
  • If your dog is still excited, begin with short reading sessions so he can practice listening quietly.
  • Give your dog lots of praise after you’re finished reading.

It can be difficult for some dogs to sit for long periods of time. You may wish to choose a different activity to do with your dog which you both can enjoy. Teach your dog some tricks like shake and rollover. Ask an adult to help set up an obstacle course to go through with your dog – you can crawl under a chair and jump over a log. Play hide-and-seek with your dog – once you’re out of sight, call your dog’s name and reward him when he runs to you.
